Old Soaps at Landmark Park

I took these at Martin's Drugstore which opened in Enterprise, Alabama in the 1890s. It closed in 1982, and was recently moved to Landmark Park in Dothan (my hometown) for preservation. It's a lovely old wooden building, and they had a fantastic display of old soaps.

If you'd like to see more of Landmark Park, they have a nice wee site.

It is nice to see fellow Alabamians on the web! I am from Oneonta AL (near Bham). Currently living in Lexington KY. I have been to Enterprise many times as I have a friend whose family lives there.

Beautiful soaps! And the what-are-the-chances moment of the day:
I was born in Dothan!!!

But we only lived there for two years and then we moved back up north. Neat coincidence! :)

How cool are those! My dad uses grandpa's pine tar soap, and I used to use Palmer's = )

What lovely pics. Seeing old soaps really gets me going! In Dudley in the West Midlands, there is a living museum (The Black Country Museum), which has been made into a mini town (with it's own chippy, pub, hardware store, bakers etc) and brought back to life. They've got an old fashioned chemist (nothing unfortunately for sale) and the items in there were found in an old chemist's basement. All items were catalogued and are now on show in the cabinets. There are tons of old soaps, skin preparations etc. It makes me want to stay and never go back home. If you're ever in the midlands go check it out!

Thanks, everyone! I had a feeling a group of soapmakers might like to see these. :) Sadly, the shop wouldn't sell me any of them.

Natalie, we used to live in Louisville. I've only been to Lexington for an Auburn/Kentucky game, but I had a great time while I was there.

Amber, I can't believe you were born in Dothan! Small world!

Thanks again for having a look at my pics. I was thinking of all of you when I took them! :)

We still use (or my son does anyway) Grandpa's Pine Tar soap too! The display reminds me of the Vermont Country Store catalog which has lots of lovely old time things in it.

Teresa, I had no idea any of these things were still around. Being over here means I'm way out of the loop!
