Thanks everyone. Alas, it was no Alice who remains our only freeloading hen. This turned out to be an odd egg from Ruby. She usually lays dark brown eggs, but this one didn't get the full coating.

I think the freckles are sooo cute! Our hens occasionally lays them too, but I've not looked into why they do that.

Lovely.

I wanted to tell you--I finally got my hens. They're still babies yet. We picked them up a week ago. I love them already. I've wanted them for a long time and you are one of the few people who kind of inspired me to finally just go for it.

This is definitely a great adventure!

Hi Teresa, it's something to do with the coating the egg gets. I have heard that all eggs start out white. The colour comes at the very end of laying.

Dalene, hooray! Congratulations!

Ohhh...I can't wait until the little chickies we got last week are big enough to start laying!

E, what kind of chicks did you get? I'm heading to your blog to look for photos. :)

Alice is a pencil-laced Wyandotte, and a freeloader. The egg was laid by Ruby the Wellsummmer.

Beautiful egg =D We are getting 6 layers to leave at a friends farm. I'm so excited!!! I picked hens that can lay through winter, so we'll see what happens =D

Heidi, that's great news! I am so happy you found a solution.
