She's Back Home

I am so happy to report that our wee hen Nudge has recovered from her injury. This morning, we found her first egg in her temporary sleeping quarters!

Hens typically won't lay if their bodies are distracted with other things, so an egg from Nudge means she's healed and happy. So today my lovely husband and I partitioned the run to help Nudge reintegrate with the flock. As you can see, the 'Welcome Wagon' are none too thrilled to be cut off from pecking the new addition. They keep throwing themselves at the fence.

I do think chickens are wonderful, but they're not the brightest creatures I've ever encountered.

Hooray for Nudge being 100% again!! I know it; chickens can be so mean and catty to each other, cute as they are to us. I hope they'll successfully reintegrate quickly.

I don't think their so bright either, maybe that's what makes them so fun to watch = )

Teresa, we are so relieved. I didn't think she'd live - much less recover, lay eggs, and rejoin her sisters. She seems to be having a ball out there scratching about.

Heidi, they are really amusing, aren't they? I would love to have a giant flock.

Yay for Nudge! I don't know what I'd do if something happened to one of my little hens! I worry about them in the coop~ it's been below zero F. at night. They have a light, straw & eachother, but still! Best wishes to Nudge & her sisters!

Heather, we did try keep a safe emotional distance from our girls, but they got to us in the end. They're much-loved pets.

I worry about the cold, too, but they seem to be managing okay. They really know how to snuggle!
