Toast (our leghorn cross) laid her first egg today.

So much hen excitement lately!

Oooh fresh eggs! I've been trading soap for eggs with friends. If I can find some nice laying hens I'll buy them...after my friends get the hang of the farming thing = )

Oh, do get some hens. They are so easy to look after, and they're really lovely animals. I am so crazy about mine (more than I should be!) and will be expanding the flock a little at the end of October.

I second what Elizabeth said...chickens are way easier to take care of than any other animal (including dogs and cats), give you food (either eggs or meat or both), and are more fun than television to watch (not that you watch tv, Heidi). :)

E, your egg carton looks just like ours: blue eggs and brown eggs of varying shades!

Teresa, I hope to add more colours to the egg mix very soon. I have gone chicken crazy.

I'm going to check craigslist again = ) We have friends who have a small farm and they volunteered to keep chickens for us. They are still in the learning process and haven't had much laying since the weather turned cold. Anything you can suggest to help them learn more? Books? Websites?

I love the egg! Our Amercauna (sp?) laid her first today. It's a really pretty blue. I am mesmerized by my ten hens. They are the cutest! Happy omelette!

Heidi, I've learned a lot at the Omlet.co.uk forum. Everyone is so nice and willing to share what they know about keeping hens.

Soapy, Toast is our sweet girl. She's actually my nine-year-old son's bird.

Heather -- ten hens! I've be in heaven. Is this egg from one of the chicks you hatched yourself? I seem to remember your having some tiny chicks at one point.
